About Yad Yehuda.

This site is a project of Yad Yehuda of Greater Washington and serves as a COVID-19 resource for the Greater Washington Jewish community.

Yad Yehuda of Greater Washington is a volunteer organization that serves as the Jewish community's financial safety net, assisting hundreds of individuals from every Jewish neighborhood in the Greater Washington area each year.

It is likely that everyone living in the Greater Washington Jewish community — knowingly or unknowingly — has contact with a friend, family member or neighbor who has benefited from Yad Yehuda.

About Us

In order to maximize the assistance we are able to offer those in need, Yad Yehuda works closely with individuals, families, and communal leaders. Since 2006, Yad Yehuda has fed, clothed and paid rent, utility and medical bills for needy individuals and families in a way which preserves their personal dignity. Some of these individuals and families have fallen on hard times due to unemployment, personal and financial struggles or illness.

The goal of Yad Yehuda is to help these individuals and families get back on their feet by lending a helping hand. Through collaboration with other organizations and institutions, Yad Yehuda is able to offer a variety of support programs including job assistance, financial subsidies for Shabbat and Yom Tov needs, food certificates and foreclosure prevention.

Our Philosophy

Nobody asks to be in a difficult financial situation. Being in that situation does not mean that someone is a not a responsible person; it does not mean that they made poor choices; it does not mean that they do not work hard. For whatever reason, Hashem occasionally presents individuals and families with financial challenges. It is our privilege and our responsibility to do whatever we can to help.

Our job is:
  • to approach each person with dignity and respect
  • to treat all conversations as confidential
  • to remain objective
  • to provide excellent resources
  • to be as thoughtful and helpful as possible

Our History How It All Began

The motivation for this organization was the unique personality of a boy named Yehuda Mond who, in his short life of nineteen and one half years, influenced so many of his family and friends. The challenges Yehuda presented helped those around him learn about unconditional love, unending patience and the enormous strength that lies within each of us. If those qualities could be harnessed to help assist the less fortunate — those that society is quick to judge — then it could serve to bring out so much virtue in so many people. It would benefit those who receive as well as those who give — those who give of their money and those who give of their time. By facilitating this process through Yad Yehuda, we can elevate the neshama of Yehuda and assist in the causes that were important to him in his lifetime.

Since Yad Yehuda's inception, there has been an outpouring of community support, expressed both in donations and in the involvement of its many dedicated volunteers. It is through the combined efforts of so many that Yad Yehuda has been able to help so many and impact our community in such a positive way.
